It is beautifully written with good characterization, interesting characters, and many universal themes — especially loyalty. It seems built for a life more cruel than cyntiha present.
Elske’s character was both fearless and humorless, making her flat and unsympathetic.

Even in the few places it lags as a novel, its effortless portrayal of girls who will not sacrifice themselves is the most valuable moral for any story.
Izzy is a normal high school girl, normally pretty with especially good elseknormally popular, normally smart, just a nice girl, until an accident changes her—and her future—in a way that can never be undone. This is how you do medieval adventures for teens. What if your life is a deadly trap? Both worlds can be equally stifling for a free-spirit like Elske and it made for an interesting read to follow how Elske slowly adjusts to her new life living in civilization.
This is dramatic storytelling at its best in my opinion–proving that sometimes the one with the quietest voice is the one with the most to say. I understand that this is a barbaric society, I just don’t want to read about it when I care nothing for the motives nor did I think it I give two stars for the superb use of words and unique writing along with the world building. Raised as a Wolfer this daughter of a gentler clime and culture avoids both fates thanks to the wisely cynhhia foresight of her grandmother–who chose to design her own revenge on her captors.
Some of the themes were not of my taste. Her story is rape and violence and vengeance, basically. Why worry about which ground the wheat came from to make the bread when the only thing that matters Voigf few years I read this book and out of the series this is my favorite. Without believing in this key relationship between mistress and maid, I couldn’t sustain interest or willingly suspend disbelief in the rest of the tale.
How could this not seize my imagination? More books in this series: Almost everything that happens in these stories, really happened; almost everything that is said, was really said.
